Write an analysis of The Harvesters (1565) by Pieter Bruegel the Elder.

/ Pieter Bruegel the Elder, The Harvesters, 1565
(visit metropolitan museum Second Floor, MET, European Paintings Galleries)
In your essay you may want to consider some of the following themes/questions: What is the technique, size, and type of painting? What are the main elements of the composition and how do they interact/work together in the space of the image? Consider issues of perspective, space, color, light. How does the composition guide you in looking over the surface of the painting? What can we tell about the meaning of the work – what is its subject matter? And how is the story narrated in pictorial terms? What kind of response does this work evoke in its audience?

BEFORE you start writing your essay, in the museum or in front of the building, make an outline already. Make sure that you address the points that seem to be of most relevance to you. Explain what you are going to look at/compare and why you are choosing precisely these points of comparison.

Organization
State your argument at the beginning of the paper.
Introduce the artwork with a brief general description/artist’s name, date, and where it was painted, after which all description should be in service of your argument.
Order your points logically. Throughout the essay, make sure you always support your argument with specific information drawn from YOUR *OBSERVATION* and *ANALYSIS* of the painting/building. Try not to make general comments regarding the time period for example. *Anything in your paper should be derived from the painting in front of you.*

Style
Take an objective tone, avoiding first-person narrative.
Avoid unnecessary repetition.
Proofread for spelling, grammar, and style.
The paper should be three pages, one-inch margins, double-spaced, in 12 pt Times font.
Number your pages and staple them together.
The title of your paper, your name, date, etc. should take only a couple of lines.

****Remember****
Your paper should not just be a description of the painting/building.
This paper is also not about your personal feelings about the painting/building or its quality, so try to remain as objective as possible in your analysis.
Finally, do not try to do it all since this paper is too short for it. Quality is more important than quantity.
****NO research, only careful looking. The purpose of this assignment is to practice and test your***** VISUAL skills.*****

* = important !!!!
