Women Still Trapped Below Glass Ceiling of Party Politics

Women Still Trapped Below Glass Ceiling of Party Politics
Abstract
This paper describes the key issue raised and its importance to gender; offers a brief discussion of its weakness and/or strength, three questions raised and lastly, gives my opinion about its significance to women in history.

Based on a U.N. Development Program and National Democratic Institute co-publication, despite the fact that between 40 and 50% of global political parties members are women, a mere approximately 10% are in leadership and therefore, the political parties should endorse political empowerment of women.
The strength of the article is that it states that without women leading parties, they can’t be able to lead administrations. This is because before women can show their ability of leading a government, they must first prove their ability by first leading a political party. Also, nations such as Canada, in Costa Rica and South Africa have such as Canada’s diversity method of candidate selection, Costa Rica’s men and women alternation method of political party candidacy selection and South Africa’s parliamentary calendar in accommodating parliamentarians with families (Thalif, 2012). India’s party Bhatariya Janata Party reserved 33% women leadership in 2008 and Germany’s Christian Democratic Union adoption of a 33% reservation for party leaders in 1996. This portrays how some nations ensure the integration of women in politics and political changes that favor women.
Weakness; worldwide, women who hold ministerial leadership positions are averagely16%; a mere 5% of women in national leadership positions.
In my opinion, the role of women leadership in political parties, in governments and as heads of state has chart a favorable course. Even though some nations have strived to achieve 30% women in positions of decision-making such as India and Germany, the suppression of women in leadership roles is still apparent. To cite an example of Zambian women whose participation in politics ended with the elections, the full integration of women in decision-making roles worldwide and the implementation of the proposed quotas is a mile wide but an inch deep.
