What is Ethics in Research & Why is It Important?

Ethics mainly distinguish what is accepted and what is unaccepted. Ethical issues of importance to research include; (Resnik, 2010) honesty, objectivity, integrity, carefulness, openness, respect for intellectual property, confidentiality, responsible publication, responsible mentoring, respect for colleagues, social responsibility, non-discrimination, competence, legality, animal care and human subjects protection.
It is important to maintain high levels of ethic practices in research since it assists the researcher to achieve the aim of the research through knowledge, truth and omission of errors (Resnik, 2010). Research involves many people; for instance the researcher, the institution of learning and of data collection and then the respondents. For the research to be successful, a positive collaboration is important. Therefore, ethics provides values that help in collaboration like trust, accountability, respect and fairness (Resnik, 2010). It is also important because it helps researchers to be accountable to the public by ensuring that researchers conduct themselves as required and respect human while avoiding conflict (Resnik, 2010). It is through ethical practices that the public can support the research by may be funding the research. This can only happen when there is trust the quality and integrity of research. Ethic is also important in research because it promotes other moral and social values like responsibility, human rights, compliance with the law and promotion of health and safety (Resnik, 2010).
Without ethics, the subjects may not be able to give information required but because ethics practices assure them of privacy and confidentiality, the information required is given without fear. Information collected through research is important to the public and it is trough ethics practices that proper dissemination is done (Resnik, 2010). The researchers are able to get accurate information hence their work will be free from error. Therefore ethics practices are important both to the researcher and to the subjects.
In this management course, high level of ethics has been maintained to ensure accuracy of the results. This was achieved through; first getting a letter from my learning institution and from the institution where data was to be collected. Then I sought the consent of the subjects and assured them of privacy and confidentiality. It was also achieved through making sure that no personal questions were asked and the names of the subjects were not indicated. There are plans to ensure that the results of the research are disseminated to assist the public.
