According to the Mayo Clinic website, alternative cancer and complimentary services are not always to treat the disease itself but to treat the symptoms of the disease. As Becky mentioned, just because it is natural does not mean it’s safe to use with your current treatment. Some symptoms alternative therapies can be used for are: Anxiety, Fatigue, Nausea, Vomiting, Pain, Sleep Problems, and Stress. Various different therapies can be used for multiple symptoms, such as Acupuncture, Yoga, Hypnosis, Aromatherapy, exercise, massage, Tai Chi, and meditation (among others). I have personally used hypnosis for sleep issues and I have found it successful and I feel hypnosis is one of the safer options you can use because you are fully aware of what is going at all times, it’s noninvasive and has little to no side effects, except for sleepiness due to extreme relaxation.

There are many complementary and alternative therapies available to cancer patients. However, the efficacy and safety of most of them have not been successfully proven. According to the American Cancer Society, some complementary therapies would be; acupuncture, meditation, yoga, hypnosis, special diet, herbal and vitamin supplements, and of course, medical marijuana. Alternative therapies are used in place of traditional therapy and many times involve patients traveling to other countries to receive therapies that are not proven safe or effective in our country. Some people use a combination of herbs along with adjunct therapies instead of chemotherapy and/or radiation. There is some merit to some of these alternative therapies, however, the studies have not been done on them to prove them safe or effective. Personally, I feel some of these therapies may be extremely helpful but pharmaceutical companies are making a fortune off of FDA approved treatments so these alternative therapies never get off of the starting line. It is a shame that more complementary and alternative therapies are not studied as we have not come very far in finding a cure for cancer. It may be right in front of us if we just look where we need to. As a society, we are becoming too reliant on what we are “told” to do and have stopped looking at other options available to us. Sometimes, finding the combination that works for the individual is much more effective that blasting someone with what is considered standard treatment. The American Cancer Society website offers information on traditional, complementary, and alternative therapies. This is a great resource as it is not biased towards traditional treatment. It lists some great options for patients to consider.

I think with proper education, patients will have the right knowledge and acquire skills that they need in order to better themselves. Education is key when it comes to attaining positive patient outcomes. When patients are educated right from the get go, they will be more inclined to keep it going and maintain that discipline that they need if they want to successfully attain their goals. One big factor that may hinder this is not regularly following up with their health provider which may lead to poor motivation to continue with their health regimen.

I think it really depends on the motivation of the patient whether or not they will incorporate the self-care habits into their regimen. Education is very important and the knowledge needs to get out there to our patients so they understand the process of their care. Along with education we need to make resources available to these people, such as support groups and specialty clinics that specialize in diabetic education if available in the area. Exposing these patients to each other is one of the best ways for these patients to learn about their chronic illness diabetes. They can get specialized information from professionals that deal with this disease, and they can collaborate with others that have the same diagnosis, and sometimes that is really reassuring to the patient.
Barriers or factors that could affect the efficacy could include not having the resources to maintain a self-care management, behavior of the patient, and even the lack of education by professionals.
