The rise of America as an economic power
The rise of America can be attributed to its brilliant leaders, who are descendants of “the Europeans who got up and headed for America”. During the 20th century, the American leaders were more focused on economic growth in the nation than in relations with oversea countries. America was connected to foreign countries through commerce, politics and joint ventures and thus its economy was slowly but surely growing.
However, brilliant leadership depended on one major factor: the American economic system which is widely referred to as the “American System”. This system ensured that the country’s products found their way in the market and discouraged the imported products (Martin, 2001). Buying home-made products, “Made in USA” really helped boost the countries economy.
There were several measures that were used to ensure that the home market was secure which developed the countries economy. These measures were put to boost the nation’s commerce. One was imposing a tariff that ranging 20-25% tax so as to cushion the country’s products against imported. Second, the country developed the infrastructure, more so transporting channels to ensure fast and reliable trade for everyone. Third, easier trade was boosted by the country’s decision to endorse one currency.
The Second World War also boosted the economy of America as it was a major international supplier of weapons and while countries in the Europe league majorly bore the blunt of the war, America was little affected. Major factories were either directly or indirectly affected by the war and ceased manufacturing and while those in America were still operating undettered, America had to step in to satisfy the customers. To cap it all, the major economic competitors of America were adversely affected by the Second World War through either destroyed economically, by being demolished. Those that survived that were left6 bankrupt such as Russia.
