Read pages 145-151 and explain why Thomas Cole was considered the father of the Hudson River School. Include information about his Niagara Falls paintings as well as his important series The Course of the Empire. Then read pages 156-160 and provide information on Coles pupil Frederic Edwin Church (1826-1900). Include his background and his interest in the dramatic wilderness of South America and his large scale vistas of Americas disappearing countryside.
