Due Date:
Your research paper and take-home final exam should be submitted (separately stapled, paper printouts) Make sure to tell the Instructional Services staff that you are in . There will be a separate folder for research papers and one for the final exam.

There will be no opportunities to make up the final or submit it or the research paper late. After the deadline above, no final exams or research papers will be accepted for any reason. I encourage you to submit your papers as early as possible, well ahead of the timed deadline as a precaution against unexpected events.

I. Research Paper Audience
Throughout this entire research paper, you will pretend to be Thomas Harris, author of the Hannibal Lector novels. The tone of writing you will adopt in this research paper should be appropriate for an audience comprised of college-educated horror fiction fans. Do not assume that your audience is familiar with the Hannibal Lector novels and films; you will have to explain any reference you make to the Hannibal Lector series in full.
__________________________________________________________________________

II. Research Paper Structure:
Your research paper will be comprised of two parts in the following order:
1) Your new ending of your novel Hannibal presented as a short chapter (5-7 pages)
2) Your preface to your new second edition of Hannibal (10-11 pages).

1) Your New Final Chapter of Hannibal, second edition (5-7 pages)

Imagine that you are planning to rewrite the ending (p489-544) of your novel Hannibal for its second edition of publication. Your goal for your revised ending would be to make it conform with Freud’s ideas in “The Uncanny” in a new way.

• In your new chapter, make sure you use some of the narrative and descriptive techniques from The Longman Writer: Rhetoric and Reader by Judith Nadell et al. (pgs 153-158, 195-200)
• Please avoid duplicating the endings from the original edition of Hannibal (Harris) and from Ridley Scott’s film Hannibal.
• You are responsible for acquiring and viewing Ridley Scott’s Hannibal on your own time at home before the class on which the film has been scheduled for discussion.
• Make sure to divide your short story into paragraphs that conform with the general writing style set in the first 488 pages of Hannibal, which will remain unchanged in your second edition.
• Make sure to give your new chapter a new title.
• I recommend that you read Thomas Harris’s Hannibal Rising for background information about Hannibal Lector’s childhood.

2) Your Preface to Your New Second Edition of Hannibal (10-11 pgs)

Break your Preface into the following four sections. Skip a line between sections. You will need to decide where to divide paragraphs within each section. No section should look like one long paragraph.

Sections:
a) Section One: Literary Techniques Used (3 pages)
b) Section Two: Hannibal: Comparing and Contrasting the Film, the Original Novel, and Your New Edition (3 pages)
c) Section Three: Social Problems in Hannibal (3 pages)
d) Works Cited Page (1-2 pages)

Each section of your preface shall be a mini-essay with
• its own title,
• introduction paragraph that ends in a thesis,
• body paragraphs that each start with a topic sentence and end with a concluding sentence
• a conclusion paragraph.

a) Section One: Literary Techniques Used (3 pages)

Thesis
Describe the process of performing research for your chapter as well as the process of writing your chapter. What did you learn about the process of writing a work of literature?
In Your Body Paragraphs
Support your account of your writing experience by discussing which narrative and descriptive techniques (from Chapters 10 and 11 from The Longman Writer: Rhetoric and Reader by Judith Nadell et al.) you used in your new final Chapter. Illustrate with quotations from your new Hannibal ending.

b) Section Two: Influence of Psychoanalysis on Your New Chapter (3 pages)

Introduction
Summarize the plot of the original ending of the novel Hannibal (p489-544).

Thesis
Compare and contrast Clarice Starling’s persona in all three different texts (your ending, the novel, and the film) You are welcome to write on any part of the novel / film—not just the ending. Make sure to explain Clarice’s actions through Freudian concepts.

Body Paragraphs
Make sure to close-read some of your quotations.

c) Section Three: Close-Reading Cannibalism (3 pages)

Introduction
Describe some different examples of cannibalism throughout human history. You can focus on individual cannibalism or the cannibalism of certain tribes.

• Some contemporary cannibals include Armin Meiwes, Tsutomu Miyazaki, Jeffrey Dahmer, Andrei Chikatilo, Albert Fish, etc..

Thesis Question
What are some important social problems raised by cannibalism in the original novel Hannibal?

Body Paragraphs
Make sure to close-read some of your quotations.

d) Works Cited: (1-2 pages)

• Be sure to follow MLA format for your Works Cited page.
• Your Works Cited page should have at least four sources (not including our class readings). At least 3 sources may not be websites. Information from GCC library online databases (e.g. Proquest or JStor) are not considered websites since the material originally existed in print form.
• You should include our class readings in your Works Cited page if you quote from those readings.
• A Missing Works Cited page could lead to a non-passing grade.

III. Use of Research Materials:
Use of Research Materials: Support your Preface with a discussion of quotations from your library source material. Suggested source material include scholarly literary criticism on Hannibal or film criticism on the Hannibal Lecter series, essays on Freudian psychoanalysis or the Freudian uncanny, scholarly literary essays on any other text or film that involves cannibalism, biographical information on Thomas Harris, and anthropological articles on cannibalism in general.
I also highly recommend that you also perform research in order to better understand the historical, Biblical, and literary allusions in Hannibal. These include the history of the US meatpacking industry and FBI as well as Dante’s Inferno and historical figures like Judas, Pietro della Vigna, Machiavelli, the laws of medieval Italy etc..
It is necessary to research existing scholarship on your topic in order to show that you are a responsible researcher. With this in mind, use the existing research sources to either 1) clarify or verify your own position, 2) provide evidence for a counterargument, or 3) show that your Preface is valuable because not enough work has been done on the scholarship of cannibalism. For instance, in Section 3, you can describe another researcher’s thesis in order to show that it does not address the most important social problems raised by Hannibal.

Warning: I would advise sticking as much as possible with GCC library online databases or traditional books / journals from the GCC library rather than general web research (from sites such as Google). There are many extremely disturbing violent, even pornographic websites or films that may pop up with you conduct web research on cannibalism. For instance, there is an online film of German cannibal Armin Meiwes killing, dismembering, cooking, and eating his victim. Be cautious when opening any links when researching cannibalism online in order to avoid seeing materials you may find offensive.

IV. Special Homework Requirements:

1) Working Drafts: A working draft or outline of each section of your research paper is required, including your new ending to Hannibal. Each working draft section or outline that is late will lead to 10 points off your research paper grade. Each working draft section or outline that is not submitted at all will lead to 15 points off your research paper essay grade.

2) Library Workshop Form: You will need to attend one library workshop by the due date. If you do not attend a workshop, your research paper grade will be lowered by an additional 10 points.

3)Annotated Bibliography (2 pages): This homework is not the same as your Works Cited page since your Works Cited page will not contain one paragraph descriptions of the contents of each source. If you do not turn in your Annotated Bibliography at all, 15 points will be deducted from your final essay grade. If it is late, 10 points will be deducted from your final essay grade. See handout for specific instructions.

Organization Requirements Per Section

Warning: Please do not copy or quote the language of the study guides or the extra explanatory sections of the handouts. Also, please do not quote Dr. Kwa’s comments in class. Paraphrase the material in your own words or quote the published section of the reading itself and then explain the quote in your own words.

1) Introduction: Each section (except your new ending itself) should begin with an introductory paragraph that ends in a thesis statement.

2) Thesis formation: Each section (except your new ending itself) needs a thesis statement.

3) Body Paragraph Organization and Unity: The main idea of each body paragraph should differ from that of the other paragraphs; in other words, every paragraph should argue a different point.

4) Topic and Concluding Sentences: Each body paragraph must begin with a topic sentence that makes a claim that the body paragraph will then develop. Since each paragraph discusses different points, topic sentences should not all be identical to one another.
Each body paragraph should end with a concluding sentence that reminds the reader of how your examples support your topic sentence claim.

5) Title: Each section of this research paper needs its own title. Include a blank line between sections. The title should be centered and double-spaced like your heading and the rest of your paper. Capitalize all key words. Not underlined or in boldface. No period at the end of the title. Follow the General : Specific MLA format. Your title should not just copy the title of this essay prompt.

6) Conclusion: Each section of the research paper (except your new ending itself) needs its own conclusion paragraph. The conclusion is a place for you to summarize your thesis and add any comments that do not directly support your thesis but might be relevant to your previous discussion.

7) Quotations: You will need to support any assertions you make with a discussion of quotations from the various texts assigned. All quotations should have an introductory phrase and should abide by MLA format. All quotations should be followed by several sentences that provide a detailed explanation of how the quotation supports your topic sentence claim. Provide the name and professions of authors you are quoting from your own research sources.

8) Transitions: Include transitions to smooth the flow of your argument. Be sure to vary where you place the transition word; do not always place it at the beginning of the sentence. Sometimes the more appropriate place is in the middle.
