Using the Finnish system as your model, write a policy proposal that aims to improve the quality of education in public K-12 schools in the United States.
To support your argument, cite Amanda Ripley’s research in her book “The Smartest Kids in the World” and additional data from 7-10 sources in the ARC databases. Research a variety of sources. If you include material from a website, make sure to use the criteria for evaluating websites from the text “Writing Arguments” by John D. Ramage (page 282, table A 2.3); however, the majority of your data should come from newspapers, scholarly journals, and books.
The goal of your research is to find out as much as possible about the Finnish system to help you decide which of its elements can be implemented in the United States.
Preparatory tasks:
1. Review the organization plan on page 261 in the “Writing Arguments” text and study the sample proposal by Juan Vasquez on pages 264-268. Be sure to include the following:
a. An introduction of the problem (The Ripley book will be helpful there)
b. Your solution/claim
c. Your justification of the proposed solution (supported by evidence)
d. A summary of and response to opposing views
e. A call to action
2. Locate sources that meet the STAR criteria, Make sure to keep accurate and complete notes to save time during the drafting process.
3. Review the format in the sample MLA essay in the MLA folder and the format of the sample proposal by Vasquez.
4. Implement feedback received by your peers and instructor.
