Monsters

Write a 2 1/2 page essay, typed and double-spaced. Use the “Composition Guidelines” found on page 3 of Unit 1 for formatting your essay. Make sure you credit your source of information by mentioning it in your text, using MLA parenthetical in-text citations and including a Works Cited page. Create your essay in a Microsoft Word compatible document, and then upload it as an attachment in the “Dropbox.” Write on only one of the following topic choices: TOPIC 1. Jeffrey Cohen emphasizes that monsters “are disturbing hybrids whose externally incoherent bodies resist attempts to include them in any systematic structuration” (14). Create an essay . . . that analyzes how a monster “refuses easy categorization,” illustrating and explaining the significance of the different hybrid parts and how they conflict with typical definitions and categories (14). Also, explain how this monster “offers . . . an invitation to explore new spirals, new and interconnected methods of perceiving the world” (15). In other words, how does the monster’s lack of categorization open up new possibilities for interpreting its significance to society? You may use one of the monsters from “The Ritual of the Bones” or “The Erlking” in Nocturnes. You may find and use any monster from literature, TV or movie screen. You will have to do some research on this monster. [Hint: use the monster that you did a little research on in you Discussion Board posting.] You may use another monster found in another short story in Nocturnes. You must include an illustration of your monster in your essay (remember: your illustration must come after it is first mentioned in the essay). [This essay topic is taken from Monsters (Fountainhead Press, V Series, 2012), p. 34.] OR TOPIC 2. Jeffrey Cohen cautions us that “the monster of prohibition exists to demarcate the bonds that hold together that system of relations we call culture, to call horrid attention to the borders that cannot—must not—be crossed” (21)—monsters are warnings! In an essay, explore and analyze how a monster functions as a societal warning: What is it warning against? Who is it warning? How is it warning against this boundary? Is it rising up and enforcing a boundary that maybe shouldn’t exist? In other words, should it be vanquished? (Hint: you will have to deal with Cohen’s thesis V in this essay–and possibly another] You may find and use any monster from literature, TV or movie screen. You may use one of the monsters from “The Ritual of the Bones” or “The Erlking” in Nocturnes.
