Note: I would urge you to also review some of Steve Mann’s source research, journal articles, etc. on this topic

Compose a 1250-1500 word essay on the following:

The evolution of technology has created an array of personal recording and tracking devices that can provide both benefits as well as put at-risk the privacy of the individuals that are using the technology as well as those around them. The textbook article discusses surveillance technology in the form of a nanny cam (most times hidden from the participants). Public realm surveillance is also very common in today’s society (e.g. cameras in parks, transit stations, on streets, etc.). These cameras tend to be used by public safety officials for public safety and security reasons. There is also the sousveillance culture that has emerged, were participants are recording their surroundings. Wearables, mobile devices, trackers, etc., have all been developed that in one way or another are involved in this sphere of tracking/observing behaviour. Not to mention, the provision of data that people share voluntarily over social media that can create a virtual representation of practically every activity that they partake in on a given day. (For other technologies – be sure to review the information in Chapter 5).

Using the lenses provided in the text to provide philosophical context and provide your informed opinion on the following topic:

In today’s society, is personal privacy a reasonable expectation? What protections can end-users/citizens put in place in an attempt to retain privacy? Does the (potential) loss of privacy hold specific risks? How does the balance between surveillance/sousveillance, social, and opt-in technologies vs. privacy impact society in general?

Marks will be allotted for the development of your thesis.

You are encouraged to find references to specific cases that demonstrate your perspective.
