Identify and solve faulty Logic: Explore an example of logical fallacies on an important topic in contemporary culture

The student will:

• Explain core ideas in your option (see below)

• Create a criteria from which to evaluate a philosophical position

• Develop a new unique position that demonstrates personal reflection, course content, and independent research

Overview: Essay 6 pages in length (1450 words) that demonstrates research, use of course concepts and textbook, and either synthesis or evaluation. Submit electronic copies into SLATE Dropbox before the due date in Week 12.

Instructions:

1. For your essay, choose ONE of the following options:

a. Become an expert: Find a philosopher on whom will become an ‘expert’. Identify their core ideas, the context in which these ideas appear, find key quotes, paraphrase their meaning, illustrate or give applicable examples of their ideas, and evaluate the ideas. Include a very brief bio, fields of philosophy or historical periods relevant to understanding them. Choose a philosopher from the textbook or outside the course.

b. Political philosophy: Study the idea of a political philosopher and apply them to a contemporary problems. What is a central idea of how we should relate to other people? What political/government does it suggest and how would it change our lives?

c. Continue a study in either epistemology or metaphysics: Either continue to explore the ideas and problems discussed in epistemology or metaphysics. Choose a philosopher to focus on, explain and illustrate their core ideas and research how they have been developed and present your evaluation or synthesis with a new idea.

d. Select an “-ISM”: Create a thesis which explores and explains another philosophy of life not covered by the course. To create a thesis, focus on one core idea of the belief system with a view to explain its connection other important ideas in that philosophy of life. Identify the context, central figure, and the important core beliefs. Put the philosophy of life in the most positive light possible.

e. Identify and solve faulty Logic: Explore an example of logical fallacies on an important topic in contemporary culture. Your thesis will suggest how the argument could work logically. Discuss the fallacies, what forms of logic could solve the problem, and give your logical argument.

f. See me if you have an alternate idea.

2. In your best and concise writing:

a. Explicate key ideas and identify a central figure. Be sure to show appropriate connections of ideas.

b. Quote or paraphrase appropriate primary and secondary sources. You must use three sources and at least one primary source. Properly use in-text citations and a bibliography. Include the course textbook as well. Use the textbook but it does not count towards demonstrating your ability to research.

c. Make connections and links to course content: use what you have learned to illustrate, compare, make arguments, interpret etc.

3. Writing and submission requirements:

a. Use MLA style and provide proper in-text references throughout and Works Cited page

i. Your writing may not include more than 10-15% of quoted material, and all quotes must be referenced.

ii. Bibliography does not count towards page length/word count.

b. If you paraphrase you still need to reference your source

a. No cover page – put your full name, course code, day and time the class meets, and date of submission in the top left hand corner of page one, single spaced. (This does not count towards your page length/word count) and below that create a unique title that expresses the central idea of your paper

c. Proofread your writing before submitting
