Here is the questions and they have to be answered per page.
1) Several institutions have contributed directly or indirectly to the deepening devastation of civilians in contemporary conflicts. The media are often blamed for marginalizing the casualties among civilians in their coverage of war. Why does Cherkaoui argue for a ‘mediatized ideology’, and why does he consider the media a ‘subordinate of political realism’?
2) In their Non-state Actors, Fragmentation, and Conflict Processes article, the authors [page 5] wrote, “Here Cunningham, Gleditsch, and Salehyan (2009) advance a ‘‘dyadic perspective’’ that turns on identifying constellations of states and rebels, many of which may engage in conflict in any single country at any point in time.” Having read this paper and other assigned readings, discuss what kind of alternative perspective is needed, and what the risk of ignoring the role of non-state actors in shaping both national and international politics that can exist in the analytical dimension of CAR.
3) In addressing power from the perspective of CR practice, Beth Roy [p. 180] wrote, “these common concepts of power show up in conflict resolution theory as acknowledgment that inequality is a problem.”
Discuss why there is a dilemma of power from you have learned from this week’s readings, and what type of power CAR can claim in pursuing some transformation of that inequality.
4) While quoting Kenneth Boulding (1910-1993), Kevin Avruch [p. 153] wrote, “Boulding’s version of power over/to/with begins with classifying forms of power in terms of social consequences destructive, productive, and integrative.”
Discuss how these three faces of power are different from each other, and we, as students of CAR, should address power relations between the disputing parties.
