What themes are associated with hip hop music?
While the mainstream hip hop music seem to be all about lavish lifestyle and misogyny, hip hop music and its main style of rap started out a consciences movement in the African American community to express themselves and shoe their perspectives on social themes and problems that faces them such as institutional racism and tough upbringings, it evolved into a popular art form through amazing lyricism and what some call modern day poetry.
1) Lavish Lifestyles
a) Very popular in the mainstream, lacks substance.
2) Misogyny
a) Often disrespectful to women through crude lyrics.
3) Socially conscience Themes:
a) It is how hip hop started and gained popularity.
b) Making a comeback recently in the mainstream.
4) Racism and tough upbringings:
a) They are not mutually exclusive.
b) Hip hop music provided an outlet for African Americans to attack these injustices.
5) Hip hop as modern Poetry
a) Hip hop artists use rhyming words and flow through their delivery.
