Explain the similarities and the differences between the culture and societies represented in the movies: The Godfather part 1 and The Bourne Ultimatum
Similarities
Criminal activities
On both movies, there are organized criminal activities since the established gang leaders use criminals to carry out their activities such as executing their rivals. In the movie The Bourne Ultimatum, Carlos the Jackal uses his men who are mostly criminals who are known as “The Old Men of Paris”. On the other side, the society represented in the movie The Godfather deals with the illegal activities of drug dealing such as the heroin business carried out by the Tattaglia’s family. The drug barons, try to wipe out each other.
Spying
The societies represented in the two movies are wary of each other’s activities by spying. In the movie Bourne Ultimatum, Ross is tracked on his cell phone after mentioning “Operation Blackbriar” to his editor, and also his notes are searched. Bourne is also tracked using a CCTV feed. Bourne breaks in the office of Vosen and gets away with classified documents. In the movie the Godfather, Luca Brasi is sent by Don Carleone to spy on both the Sollozzo and Bruno Tattaglia.
Retaliation
In both societies, there is the revenge and avenge of deaths. In the movie Bourne Ultimatum, Bourne assures Martin that he’s pursuing the killers of his sister. In the movie The Godfather, the Corleones send fish wrapped in the bulletproof vest of Sonny after Sollozzo try assassinate Don Corleone and wounding him severely. Sonny avenges kills Tattaglia’s son in avenging the second assassination attempt on Corleone and the jaw broken by the corrupt police.
The differences between the two movies
Setting
The movie Bourne Ultimatum depicts the authorities and their operations such as “Operation Blackbriar” and other activities of the CIA. On the contrary, the setting of the movie The Godfather is a drug dealing mafia society.
Form of execution
In the movie Bourne Ultimatum, the revenge and execution attacks are carried out by the authorities while in the movie The Godfather they are carried out by the mafia bosses.
The reasons behind the motives in the two movies
In the movie The Godfather, the mafia bosses carry out the attacks to those whom decline to have things go their way such as when the studio head Jack Woltz decline Fontane’s request of being to be cats in the movie. Don Carleone refuses to protect the heroin business of Tattaglia for fear of the loss of his political influence and in turn, Luca Brasi, his henchman is killed by Sollozzo and Tattaglia. On the contrary, the movie Bourne Ultimatum executes their quarries in order to protect either themselves or their friends.
Q2. Explore the: character’s different or similar dilemmas, the obstacles the characters face and what they do to overcome the obstacles.
Differences in the characters
In the movie The Godfather, the actors are characterized as either that that carries out illegal activities or their immediate family members while in the movie Bourne Ultimatum are characterized as law enforcers who hunt each other. Another difference is that in the movie The Godfather, the characters protect their businesses while in the movie they protect themselves.
Similarities in the characters
The main similarity between the two movies is that the actual motive is wiping out (killing) their rivals. The characters in both movies are characterized as spies. The obstacles that the characters face are being killed, spied on and the stealing of classified differences (the latter in the movie Bourne Ultimatum). There are various things done by the characters so as to avoid the obstacles. In the movie The Godfather, the characters bend to the requests of their rivals so as to be on the safe side. An example is when Woltz angrily refuse to cast Fontane but he changed his mind after finding the severed head of dearly held racehorse in bed (Joseph, 2008). The characters also act stealthier than their rivals such as where the bulletproof vest of Brasi with fish wrapped in it.
Some characters are assisted by their friends (mutual relationship) in order to overcome the obstacles such as in the movie Bourne ultimatum whereby Bourne strangles Desh so as to protect Parsons and in the movie The Godfather whereby Sonny beats Carlo so as to protect Connie. In the movie Bourne Ultimatum, the characters try to kill those who either try to hack their databases like in the case whereby Vosen orders Desh to kill Parsons on learning about his log-in attempt, but Parsons overcomes that obstacle, albeit with luck, after Landy disagrees with the decision. When Bourne steals classified documents from Vosen’s office, Vosen assigns Paz to kill him but Bourne steals a police car to evade the obstacle.
Q3. The narrative style of each movie and give examples
The movie The Godfather is a narrative style because the story starts from the beginning, then to middle and them to the end. On the contrary, the movie Bourne Ultimatum is a non-linear narrative because the story doesn’t proceed in a step-by-step method because the characters in Bourne Ultimatum put a texture and interest to the story. In the movie The Godfather, the storyline takes one from one part to the next part consecutively while the Bourne Ultimatum movie takes one from one part of the movie to the next the back to the previous one, that is, it has flashbacks.
Q4. The effectiveness of the film into bringing me into the world of story and character
The story and the characters and the stories in both movies is a faithful replica of today’s society where: like in the movie the Godfather, the drug barons try to outdo each other in their business and wiping out prospective rivals. In the movie Bourne Ultimatum, it reflects the spying activities conducted by the spying agencies in America more so the CIA.
