This paper will explore the role of the bildungsroman in three novels; Swallowing the Sun (2008), by David Park, The Apprenticeship of Duddy Kravitz byMordecai Richler and Oranges are not the only Fruit by Jeanette Winterson. This paper will focus on the identity formation of the protagonist in the “coming-of-age” novel. The genre explores the formation of a young person from a child to an adult through a process where they grow in some way, events in the protagonists lives which change them in some way such as the effect of a crisis that results in the character going through a change or personal development. Therefore it can be defined as a literary genre that explores the moral and psychological growth of the protagonist.
