Q.1. First what is COP and what is CPOP – how are they different? Be specific.

CPOP is an acronym for the community and problem-oriented policing. Community and problem-oriented policing entail developing strategies in police organizations. The strategies are aimed at replacing traditional functions in police organizations with modern and state of the art functions. In the course of police work, police utilize various programs, strategies and technology in enforcing the law and performing other duties. Community and problem-oriented policing aims at modifying the programs and strategies utilized by the police force to improve the aspect of authenticity in police organizations. It also seeks to identify issues and problems affecting police organizations in the modern society. The steps involved in the community and problem-oriented policing enable police organizations to identify, analyze and solve the issues in the organization. Problem-oriented policing is different from community policing since it does not prioritize the application of specific tactics or modification of the structure of the organization.

Community policing refers to the conceptual philosophies developed in police organizations with the aim of improving organizational strategies and tactics. Community policing involves several domains in police organizations as opposed to problem-oriented policing that involve focusing on distinct problems and issues in police organizations. Community policing deals with a range of features including distinct programs and strategies utilized in police organizations. Community policing is different from problem-oriented policing is it necessitates the inclusion of citizens while problem-oriented policing does not include citizens. Community policing fosters a healthy relationship with citizens while problem-oriented policing aims at identifying and solving problems.

Q.2. The trend is to mix them together with distinction based on what the officers are facing. Why is the good or why is it not? Charlotte, NC was a CPOP agency, and it was distinctly different than some combined model and philosophy. Philosophy is a key – use it in your discussion.

Community policing and community and problem-oriented policing interact together to ensure that social issues including crime, crime phobia, and social disorder are addressed in a timely and effective manner. The partnership between the two is essential since the philosophical aspect of community policing fosters problem-solving techniques that are integral to addressing the social issues. Philosophical values and beliefs also support cooperation between the police and the community. The cooperation enables the police to identify distinct issues and problems that affect the community. Lack of a partnership with the community would impede the efforts of police organizations to maintain social order and perform other duties. Police organizations would be unable to address specific problems that exceed traditional police duties without partnering with the community. The philosophical element concerning the beliefs and ideas associated with the police is important to the organizational performance of the police.

Q.3. Are either of these models of value in today’s world. Yes or No – Why and explain.

Community policing and community and problem-oriented policing are integral to the work done by police organizations. The two models are invaluable in the modern society. Community policing is criticized due to the difficulty in fostering a partnership between the police and the community. However, there are communities where the police are viewed positively, and their collaboration with the community ensures maintenance of social order. Community policing offers police organization the society’s perspective concerning the problems and issues affecting the community. The different perspective enables police organizations to curb crime and social disorder. Problem-oriented policing is also a model that is paramount to the identifying and analyzing social problems in the community. Problem-oriented policing also provides tactics and techniques that enable the police force to address and solve problems in the community.
