Your second writing assignment will be a response to the PBS American Experience film Klansville, U.S.A., available for viewing online at http://www.pbs.org/video/2365401775/. Your essay will be evaluated based on how thoroughly you engage the information presented in the video and how clearly you form conclusions about the events discussed. Failure to follow all of the additional instructions will also result in a deduction of points.

Choose one of the following two topics to address in your essay. Use the questions below to start your analysis, but feel free to discuss different questions or issues that you think are relevant to the topic.

The rise and fall of the Klan. Why did the Klan appeal to people in North Carolina in the 1950s? What factors ultimately led to their downfall? How successful were they in achieving their goals?

A new iteration of the Klan. In what ways did the Klan of the 1950s and 1960s resemble the Klan of the 1920s? In what ways was it different, and why?

Additional instructions:

Your essay should have a thesis statement that presents an overall conclusion and summarizes your main points (your answers to the questions).

Your essay should reflect an understanding of the entire arc of the story presented. In other words, watch the entire video and think about how the whole story relates to your theme.

Include a title that reflects the topic or thesis of the essay.

Describe specific examples of events depicted or commentary provided in the video to support your conclusions.

Outside research is not necessary, but should you choose to consult any sources other than the video, you must cite them appropriately with parenthetical citations according to MLA guidelines. You are welcome to use supplementary information from the American Experience website, but be sure to cite the exact location of any information you discuss, including direct quotations from the program transcript.

Papers should be 2-4 pages long (not counting heading or cover page), typed and double-spaced, and stapled together.

Use MLA format, including standard 12-point font and 1-inch margins. Let me know if you have any questions about MLA guidelines.
