In this last module you will be reading a chapter from Laub and Sampson’s 2003 book “Shared Beginnings, Divergent Lives: Delinquent Boys to Age 70”. This is the second of two books written by these authors using the data originally collected by Sheldon & Eleanor Glueck. You have seen this dataset referenced back when we discussed life-course theories.
The reading is the concluding chapter of their book, so obviously some of it will be a little confusing since you haven’t read the entire thing (it’s over 300 pages long). However, just focus on the parts that are relevant for our purposes. The powerpoint presentation will summarize their findings on why some offenders persist and others stop offending in adulthood. Some of these factors are family-related – how are they similar/different to what we’ve discussed earlier in the semester?
They also focus on one important element that we have not formally discussed but many of you have brought up in your discussion posts throughout the semester – the role of human agency. Many of you have made comments about how even though there are many risk factors that an individual might encounter as a child that could potentially increase offending, there is still room for a person to change. They explicitly bring in this issue with their discussion of agency. They argue that there is room for offenders to desist as adults in part because of external factors but that individual choice is also powerful. It is important to remember that all of these family risk factors we have discussed do not paint a “deterministic” picture.
