Explain the effect of caffeine on reaction time

help with the Discussion section of my research paper. I only need help getting started. I would like the first 4 pages of the discussion section written based upon the results of our data and graphs.

The effect of caffeine on reaction time

Objective: The objective of this lab is to see how caffeine effects reaction time using the stick drop task and the peg-board task.

Hypothesis: We believe that there will be a difference between the baseline reaction times and the reaction times of those who consume caffeine; we believe that the reaction times will decrease with the consumption of caffeine in both the stick drop task and pegboard task. Therefore, the reaction time for those who given caffeine will be less than their baseline reaction time. (Add reason why caffeine does this)

Sources of Variability:

  • Error in measurement
  • No added force to the stick be dropped
  • Practice effect
  • Caffeine ingested earlier in day
  • A persons tolerance for caffeine (caffeine survey)

Materials: stick, peg board, yard stick, stop watch, BP cuff, caffeine tablets, placebo tablets

Procedure:

Control Data/ Baseline reaction time data: (no caffeine)- 8 Subjects

Stick Drop

  1. Make sure test subject has normal or corrected to normal vision.
  2. Take subjects Blood Pressure and Heart Rate.
  3. Tester should stand on table with stick. Test subject should stand on floor in front of tester with dominant hand at a right angle to the body.
  4. Test subject should line up webbing of hand with tape on drop stick. Subject’s hand should be as close as possible to the stick without touching the stick.
  5. Tester should ask subject if ready and drop stick within a 10 second window. Tester should drop the stick making sure they are adding no extra to force to the falling stick.
  6. Measure distance in centimeters from the black tape starting point to where they grabbed the stick.
  7. Repeat for a total of 3 times for each subject.
  8. Calculate the average distance for each subject.
  9. Calculate the reaction or response time using this equation, with x= the average distance in meters:
    1. T= (√2 *x/9.8)

Peg Board

  1. Make sure subjects have normal or corrected vision.
  2. Set up peg-board with pieces out of the board.
  3. Time the amount of time it takes for the subject to complete the peg-board by putting all pegs into the appropriate holes.
  4. Repeat for a total of 3 times for each subject.
  5. Calculate the average completion time for each subject.

Experimental Data

  1. Give half of the test subjects caffeine and the other half no caffeine (double blind—test subjects and researchers will not know which subject is given caffeine or placebo)
  2. Wait approximately 30 minutes for caffeine to take effect.
  3. Take all test subjects Blood Pressure and Heart Rate.
  4. Repeat same steps used for collecting the control data for all subjects for both the stick drop and peg- board tasks.
  5. For both the stick drop and peg-board tasks, make a bar graph comparing the baseline reaction times with the reactions times of those who consumed caffeine and those who did not.
  6. For both the stick drop and peg-board tasks, graph Baseline reaction time, Caffeine presence, No caffeine vs Reaction time.
