Each week you will be collecting information and images related to a specific time period in a grid template for organization purposes. Typically, you will complete Part A of the grid at the beginning of the week, and Part B by the end of the week. However, for this week, since you are just getting started, Part A of the grid has been completed for you as a model to follow for the rest of the class.
Download the research grid provided, and review Part A for the Ancient Egyptian culture and time period (3,000—300 BC) to get an idea of how to complete this section of the grid in the following weeks, as well as to prepare yourself for what needs to be completed in this assignment.
Note that the follow sections of Survey of Historic Costume, Chapter 2, were used to find the information provided in the grid:
- Historical Background: Egypt
- Differences in the Development of Egyptian and Mesopotamian Civilizations
- Egyptian Civilization
- Egyptian Costume for Specialized Occupations
See the Works Cited list at the end of the document to find out what other information sources were used.
Task
Alaina (your supervisor) has asked you to complete Part B of your research grid. She would also like you to search the most recent runway shows to find examples of how Egyptian styles and silhouettes are being used in modern fashion, and then create a trend board that includes the modern images and the historical images you have gathered in your grid.
Please also always read my initial responses to the discussion threads below each assignment!
Deliverables
Part 1 Overview: Continue to do research and fill out Part B of the grid template that was started for you. Remember that the book Survey of Historic Costume is the best place to go for your information initially, and then you can supplement from there with library and Internet research. See the “Research Tips” below for more information on specific sections to read.
Be sure to continue following the guidelines of good research, writing, and citation practices:
- Use credible sources.
- Write your own understanding of the information in your own words, and write in full sentences.
- Use quotation marks to indicate any direct quotes from sources.
- Follow MLA format: cite sources of specific information, ideas, and quotes throughout your work with in-text citations, and create a Works Cited list after the last page.
Follow the template directions and complete key areas as detailed:
- Section 3: List and explain silhouettes and major clothing styles for women and men and include two primary source images to illustrate those styles: one for each gender. A downloadable list of vocabulary words is provided to the right to help with this area.
- Section 4: Address given topics regarding fabrics, textile production, and decoration and include at least one primary source image to illustrate.
- Section 5: List and explain major accessories worn by women and men for the time period and include at least one primary source image to illustrate.
- Section 6: Explain any connections between fine arts, decorative arts, architecture, and fashion, and include at least one primary source image to illustrate.
Note that most sections require 4 or more points of information. However, silhouettes, clothing styles, and accessories should be complete explanations and are allotted more points.
Part 1 Research Tips: For the grid topics, complete the following to support your research:
- Read from the textbook “Sources of Evidence For the Study of Egyptian Costume” and all following sections of the chapter
- Look for primary source images on museum websites such as:
- Do an Internet search for “Ancient Egyptian Art Museum” for more.
Part 2 Overview: Create a one-page trend board following the style of trend boards from WGSN. The board should include:
- One or more images from the most recent designer runway shows. Review the shows and see what you can notice about any similarities between the modern garments you see and those from ancient Egypt.
- Cite the sources of these images in the Works Cited list of the Research Grid
- Images that you have collected in your research grid (you don’t need to include them all: edit appropriately).
- A brief written description to explain the historic elements in the modern look or looks, and include the designer name, season, and year.
The images should be arranged into a visually appealing display that communicates the historical influences on fashion of today. Keep in mind basic elements of design such as scale, color, use of negative space, rhythm, and harmony in your arrangement. Such boards are also called “story” or “mood’ boards, as you are trying to visually “tell a story” or convey the “mood” of the theme.
In order to create professional-looking boards make sure to:
- Use high-resolution images (not pixelated or blurry).
- Avoid distorting the proportions when you re-size by only dragging from the corner of the picture and holding down the shift key.
See the examples posted with the Course Overview lecture.
Part 2 Research Tips: There are many sources online for accessing the most recent runway shows. Here are a few:
Format
Part 1: Use the template provided above.
Part 2: You may create the board using the software of your choice. Recommendations are Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop, and Microsoft PowerPoint. The final product should be saved as a JPG or PDF.
When you save your two files, name them:

FADA207_W1_A3_Board_LastName_FirstInitial
Attach them to the Discussion Area by Tuesday, November 17, 2015.
Discussion is not required for this assignment, but it is recommended that you view the assignments posted by your classmates—it will enhance your learning about these time periods, give you ideas about successful and unsuccessful approaches to the assignment, and familiarize you with the viewpoint of your peers. Please also feel free to comment and help your classmates with suggestions for improvements.
