You should begin working on the Career Readiness portion of your class this week. This discussion is designed to start you thinking about the interview process.
Your job is to hire one summer intern. You have two candidates. The first attends a top university, has a great resume, and was referred by a trusted employee. The second has an okay resume, a decent grade point average, and applied through the company’s online portal. You met with the first candidate–who did not give a great interview. There was trouble answering questions in the proper format, stumbling over words, and making appropriate eye contact. Overall, the first candidate did not make a great impression. The second candidate answered each question thoroughly, demonstrated outstanding nonverbal communication skills, and made an overall wonderful impression. Now it’s time to make a decision. Do you hire the person with the great resume but poor interviewing skills or the person with the great interviewing skills and an average resume? Be sure to explain your response.
