Essay Question Does this film offer a valid portrayal of America in the 1960s? (BOBBY) use to sources one from the movie and one from History 1302 book for college.
1. Your essay must be typed and double-spaced using Times New Roman 12-point font. It should be 2-3 pages. Please do NOT include a cover page. Instead, begin writing your essay on the first line of page one.
2. You must submit your assignment at the beginning of class
3. For a specific writing model, please feel free to use the outline below.
A. First Paragraph (Introduction)
1. Provide a brief discussion of the scope of the film. This should include the subject, time
period, geographical area, and larger issues that it covers.
2. State your argument. Essentially, this is the sentence that gives your response to the
essay question.
B. Second Paragraph – Support your argument by discussing the correlation, or lack thereof,
between the film and any particular person, event, law, or ideology from the 1960s that you
have learned about in your textbook or class lectures. At least two sources (textbook, film, primary sources, lecture notes) must be used in this paragraph, and they should be varied. For example, if one source comes from the textbook, then the second source must come from either the film, primary source documents, or lecture notes. To prevent a scrambling of ideas that fail to make a point, focus on just one person, event, law, or ideology.
C. Third Paragraph – Follow the guidelines listed for the Second Paragraph.
D. Final Paragraph (Conclusion)
1. Briefly assess the film. Do NOT tell me whether or not you liked it or found it
interesting, but tell me how successful the film was in getting its message across and
convincing you of its valid portrayal of America in the 1960s.
2. Cite any particular strengths or weaknesses of the film’s content. Do NOT get into areas
such as lighting, acting, props, etc. Remember that this is a course in history, not
filmmaking.
There is a ton of information about Bobby and the subject matter that it covers on the internet. However, you should AVOID these and any other “outside” sources. I am interested in YOUR thoughts only. If any part of your writing assignment—no matter how small—is factually determined to contain information obtained from “outside” sources, you will receive a zero.
