Read about Liker’s book first. (Luker, Kristen. 1985. Abortion and the Politics of Motherhood.) What do you think about Luker’s argument about anti-abortion, religious right, feminism. Luker argues that some women are anti-abortion because when abortion is fully available, women are under greater pressure to relinquish the traditional activities of child care in favor of career. One alternate interpretation for the religious right’s anti-abortion stance which is not foregrounded in Luker’s work is that anti-abortionists seek to control women’s sexuality, by making them live with the “consequences” of sexual activity. As such, anti-abortion activists can be read as upholding and not challenging patriarchy. Another alternate interpretation is that anti-abortionists simply see abortion as murder. After reading the whole Luker’s book, then, to follow up on her implications regarding what exactly women in the anti-abortion movement are protesting, find two separate blogs, both of which are written by women who self-identify as anti-abortion, for whom that anti-abortion stance is central to their identities, but whose blogs also contain remarks on issues other than abortion. Analyze the stances presented in the blogs, regarding the centrality of family, appropriate sexuality, and the role and importance of religion. To what degree would you identify these women as feminist, and why? Please give me the proof: turn in links for the blogs and turn in notes when you turn in your paper.
