Procedure: Watch the following movie
God is the Bigger Elvis
Watch the film carefully. Popcorn and note taking are ok. Multitasking isn’t.
Note: all of these films are available via a streaming service. You are responsible for getting access to these films.
Write up a movie review of the film, that answers the following questions:
1. What is the filmmaker’s orientation towards the religion or religious concept that they are examining (hostile, supportive, observational like an anthropologist looking at a different culture)? How do you know this?
2. How do the filmmaker’s subjects handle the filmmaker’s inquiries? Are they cooperative? Do they seem uncomfortable at any point? 3. Make some general observations about staging, lighting, tone – general aesthetics.
Film specific questions:
God is the Bigger Elvis: What did you find most striking about Dolores Hart’s story?
The Mission: How does this film change your understanding of what it means to be a Jesuit? How does it change your understanding about religious practice?
