#1:
Have you had any experience with a persons with physical & health impairments, visual or hearing impairments, or communication disorders? Is so, would you be willing to share that experience with your group?
In middle school I was a part of a peer mentor group, so I worked with students who have various levels of disabilities. I spent time reading with them and walking around the school with them. It was my job to help students with disabilities feel comfortable engaging with students without disabilities. However, I never experienced anyone with a visual or hearing impairment.
What would be the most chandelling thing about having students with no usable visual for reading in your class?
I think the most challenging thing would be to have the same materials that students without any visual impairments in braille or on audio tape so the student with a visual disability would still be able to receive the content.
What are three things that you could do to support students with little use of their hands in your class?
I think everyone is different, and some kids will want more autonomy than others, so with that in mind I think either allowing them to test using a different method would be beneficial to them, whether that is verbally, on a computer that uses a mouse with a ball, or simply providing extra time to complete the exams. I think it would also be important to let the child know that you are a support for them, but not rushing to do things for them.
#2:
The video showed me how much those with physical and health impairments are limited in body but not in mind and spirit. His determination and that of those around him inspired so many. His journey really showed me how much others want to help other people in need.
I have had limited experience with a person with impairments and if so mostly children. I think that the most important knowledge that I have gained from the experience is the amount of heart that this population has. I also think that they make you see the most of your own heart. They are so genuine in their effort and feelings that it is refreshing.
The most challenging aspect of having a student with no usable visual for reading in class would by my inability and training to help them. I would need to make sure that all materials were able to be translated for all the students in the class and that would take a a bit of extra work. I would also need to acquire the additional training needed to properly educate the students.
Three things that I could do to support students with little use of their hands in class would be to provide activities that used other areas of their body besides their hands. I would also use tools and accessories to help enhance their learning experience. Lastly, I would provide them with positive reinforcement to give them the confidence necessary for the them to feel they have succeeded.
