Write a brief essay (about 3 or 4 pages) that analyzes the novel in its historical context and/or literary period using these sources. Be sure to address each of the following in your essay:
Contextualize The Scarlet Letter in its historical, cultural, and philosophical background. Begin your essay with a brief discussion of relevant background information, including relevant information about the historical context of the work and literary period.
Use both primary (the work itself) and secondary sources (articles written about the work) that are relevant and effective in presenting an argument about this literary work in its historical context. Develop a thesis for your essay that presents an argument about the work in its historical context and/or literary period. Utilize a variety of sources throughout your essay.
Discuss and interpret elements of the literary genre (prose, specifically novel) and relate each to the historical context. In these next few paragraphs, discuss the setting, point of view, central characters/characterization, plot, and major themes as they relate to the period. Go beyond a simple plot summary, and include analysis and explanation supported by sources. Focus on examining and contextualizing this work in its historical/literary period.
You must demonstrate correct use of MLA documentation and formatting as well as appropriate selection and integration of valid secondary sources. Select credible sources (scholarly articles from peer reviewed academic journals in the library’s online databases). Choose quotations carefully and integrate them into sentences of your own effectively. Introduce and fully explain quotations and cite them according to current MLA guidelines. Use 12 point font and double space the entire essay. Include a works cited page according to MLA guidelines.
Compare/contrast the literature of this historical period to contemporary American culture.
