The second IE asks you to respond to a piece of modern or postmodern art. You may choose to visit the Weisman Art Museum and respond to a piece from their permanent collection on American Modernism; you may choose to view and respond to Amiri Baraka’s “Something in the Way of Things (In Town)”; or you may choose to view and respond to one of the following films: Memento, Amélie, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Fight Club, Being John Malkovich, Adaptation, or American Beauty. Your response should demonstrate your understanding of course concepts through your ability to 1) assert an arguable thesis; 2) integrate course concepts; 3) connect themes of our course materials to the art you’ve selected. The essay should address 4-6 points of intersection between literature and art and, as always, each paragraph of justification should include a topic sentence, provide evidence from the text, and explain the relevance of the text to your topic sentence.
