When a social worker enters a community as an “outsider,” that individual brings an identity that may encounter resistance based on long-established power/privilege relationships. The onus lies with the social worker to address such resistance and to use power responsibly. Consider how a social worker can manage imbalances of power and existing preconceptions in order to pave the way for productive advocacy work.
For this Assignment, you consider how you might mitigate your identity as an “outsider” when advocating on behalf of a group.
•Review this week’s media.
•Describe how you might advocate on behalf of a group that you are not a member of.
•Consider any writing you have done on building trust as an outsider, as well as your thoughts on progressive immigration reform.
•Develop a cohesive set of guidelines for social workers advocating on behalf of an immigrant group that they do not belong to. Support your guidelines with references to the Learning Resources.
