Chapter 7 discusses North-South relations. According to economist Jeffrey Sachs, poverty is responsible for killing 20,000 people a day. Poverty is often cited as the root of global insecurity and terrorism. Is underdevelopment in the South something to be concerned about? In your opinion, what is the biggest obstacle the South faces to successful economic development? What is the role of women in development? Is foreign aid helpful or hurtful-which kind of aid? Does the North have any obligation to assist the South? Be sure to explain your opinion and give examples where appropriate.
