Cultural Space Photo Reflection Paper

The purpose of this assignment is for you to recognize and be able to critically analyze the concept of cultural space and the ways that space can communicate about cultural values.
Write a 5-7 page paper following the criteria. You should have at least 3-4 photos of a cultural space. You need to label each photo and provide a short description under the photo.

A. Research Preparation:
Consult other resources about your cultural space for background information.
Also review a photography book of cultural spaces and take photos of a cultural
space. ALL environments have meaning and a history [for example, living in a neighborhood that has carefully manicured lawns, being in a shopping space that is constructed like a park, dwelling in a house that has an alter or spending time in a city that has a lot of liquor stores on every corner]. This space can be your neighborhood, a specific part of your city, or some interior space you elect.

B. Content of Paper:
Write a well-developed essay that explains what you captured in the photos. The photos ought to act like “evidence” for the idea you believe is being portrayed. For example if you claim that a particular space or community is designed for people of a certain socio economic status or ethnic group enclave you must support those claims by explaining how the space you have captured in photos display those claims.

1. In sum, your essay ought to communicate something about the relationship between cultural space AND intercultural communication. It should not just be a set of notations about each photo. Your photos must be taken by you and not copied from the internet. Visit the space and really study the space.

2. Here are some questions that may help you to do your thinking about this assignment:

a. How does this cultural space reflect who is included and who is left out? For example, does the space invite persons of a certain social or economic status, a certain gender or sexuality or a particular race or geographic background?
b. How does the cultural space regulate interaction? Does the space determine or affect who you interact with?
c. What artifacts [objects] are present in the space? Do these fall into certain categories, themes or classifications? What do these say about the person or persons who live in or use this space
