Background:
You are the inventor of a new, breakthrough medical device. You have secured the patents and legal
protections to protect your invention. All the research and development is complete. You are tasked
with describing the device and the situation which prompted the development. This will be a memo, so
be sure and use the memo template found in Resources.
Assignment:
Start the memo by referencing John Doe’s request for information on your medical device. Then, create
within the memo a data sheet, providing the background of the problem which is at the base of the
solution afforded by the device. For instance, stopping the bleeding in a gunshot wound prompted
RevmedX to develop their syringe with the sponges to inject directly into the wound. Previous methods
involved shaking a powder into the wound, but it usually stayed on or near the surface and did nothing
to stop the internal bleeding. By placing small sponges directly into the depth of the wound, the
bleeding is stopped. There is a widespread need to have such a technique, particularly in combat and
where guns are used to shoot victims. Those who could use such a device include the military,
emergency personnel (first responders) and police. In reality, it would also help in stab wounds, or
accidents, so all first aid kits of worth should include a small and large syringe.
Describe the device and how it works and is made. Include a picture so the reader can understand what
is being described. You should be able to find this easily. It could also contain an image wherre it is being
used on a human, or a line drawing. You choose what you think an inquisitive mind would like to see and
the degree of detail that is enough without going overboard.
Last, provide information on how this device will solve the problem, or at least lessen it. The syringe will
not save all lives, but it may give a large percentage a fighting chance to reach medical assistance. If you
would like an example of the basic information I am looking to see in this memo, check out any of the
crowd funding sites and read through their “pitches” or go to GroupOn and read through some of the
offers. It is that type of document you should be drafting. Make it lively and attractive.
