Darwin’s theory of natural selection proposes that environmental conditions, combined with variations in a population, work to determine which characteristics will be preserved in the struggle for survival. In this paper you will consider the evidence that H.G. Wells’ representation of the future of human nature and culture in The Time Machine is based on an understanding of natural selection. What are the Time Traveller’s conclusions about the future of humanity? What evidence from the future supports these conclusions? How does his knowledge of the environmental and social conditions of his era inform his interpretation of how humanity has evolved? Your paper should discuss three examples in detail, should demonstrate your understanding of the novel’s themes, and should showcase your ability to provide concrete evidence from the text to support your claims.
