Art 1010 Museum Paper

This project asks you to analyze a painting of your choice from either the National Gallery of Art, Smithsonian American Art, National Portrait Gallery or the Phillips Collection. Its purpose is to display your understanding of the elements and principles of design that we have discussed in this class and to situate the work within its historical timeframe and the artist’s body of work.
The work of art you choose must be representational (realistic, not abstract.) Your paper must be 3-5 pages of text plus a bibliography of any sources used, proper citations of sources and quotes and if necessary footnotes and endnotes. There are many online sources that help you properly cite sources. For example, www.noodletools.com. You must use proper grammar and spelling (proofread your work-don’t rely only on Spellcheck!)

A successful paper will be interesting and well written: it will present a thesis; analyze how the artist has used elements and principles of design to create a compelling image; present some information about the artist and his/her work; and situate the artwork within its time period and prevalent styles of the time. Finally, this paper is your chance to include your personal impression about the work.

Most of all, I want you to demonstrate that you have looked closely at this work of art, not simply scanned it briefly. I want to know that you spent time thinking about this image and the person who created it and that way you’ve learned in this class has informed your vision and thoughts.

There are five sections to this paper. The attached breaks down precisely how the paper has to be organized and the rubric that will be used to grade it.

I am here to help you. I want you to do well and if you have any questions about this assignment, send me an email. Through direct observation of a master work of art, write a paper that addresses the following:

1. The first paragraph should introduce the work of art and state the thesis of the paper. The following information should be included:
• The name of the artist
• the title of the work,
• date created
• medium(s) used
• country of origin
• A thesis statement: what is your theme for the paper, what are the most important aspects of this artwork and what are you planning to discuss about it?

2. The next paragraph should identify the media, technique and style of the work and briefly explain the historical and cultural context in which the work was created. This is the only part of the paper which you should do any research(and if you do, it must be cited) Use the information from the gallery, your textbook, discuss how this painting represents the artist who did it and the place and time it was done.

3. The next paragraph should be a detailed description of what is depicted in the work of art. This is a specific description of the work providing an image as if the reader were standing in front of it. How is the media used? What is the impact of the size?

4. The next 1 or 2 paragraphs should identify the elements of art and analyze how they are used in the work. The elements of art are: (If there is an absence of the above tell me that too!)
• line,
• shape
• value
• color
• texture
• space

5. The next 2 to 3 paragraphs should identify the principles of design and analyze how they are used in the work. The principles of design are:
• unity
• variety
• balance
• emphasis, focal point
• proportion/scale
• movement

6. The next paragraph should discuss the pictorial content (meaning) of the work.

7. The last paragraph should explain your personal responses to the work and why you chose to write about it. Can you relate any aspects of your life experience to the work? Deep you appreciate it more or less after researching and analyzing it? You must support your conclusions and analysis with specific examples from the work. summarize the main points of the paper and explain how these points have proven or modified the thesis statement given in the first paragraph.

If outside sources are used, appropriate citation and bibliographical references must be included. The instructor will make the student aware of these requirements and how to cite them.

The paper should be no fewer than 3 and no greater than 5 pages in length. The format should be: 12 pt font, double spaced, 1” margins. A color reproduction, on a separate page, must accompany the paper and must be identified according to the standards of the instructor.
