Your paper must answer the paper question using material from the book. That means that in your paper you must explicitly state an answer to the paper question and then provide evidence from the book for your answer. Throughout the paper you should be making a clear, organized argument that your answer is correct. You should not, at any point, summarize the book or class lectures. This is not a research paper. The only materials you may use are those you have been assigned in this class. There are two ways to reference the book in your paper: quotations and citations. A quotation uses the actual words from the book within quotation marks. A citation draws ideas from the book but does not borrow words. You want the paper to be your own argument in your own words, so try to use quotations sparingly. You should, however, use citations frequently to show that your ideas are wellgrounded in the evidence. Both quotations and citations end with a reference to the author’s name and the page that they are drawn from. For this paper you should use parenthetical citation. Within the parentheses you will put the author’s last name and the page number, separated by a comma. The final punctuation in the sentence comes after the parentheses close. So a sentence in your paper with a citation might look like this: Many influential members of the council resisted the takeover (Bawlf, 45). Your paper does not need a lengthy header. The only essential information is your name and the title of the assignment. Academic dishonesty of any sort in this paper will result in a grade of zero on the assignment. If you have any doubts about what constitutes academic dishonesty or how to correctly cite the books please talk to me immediately.
