In essays of 4 to 6 pages (1,000 to 1,500 words), please answer the following questions by the due dates indicated. I expect you to write your essay based on the readings identified below each essay, on class forums, and on lectures and other video materials presented on the web site. I do not expect you to supplement these sources with outside research. Strong essays will tap both the text and the lectures to identify appropriate evidence to answer the prompt.

The essay should provide appropriate citations to your sources. You can site more than 1 source but please do not use sources other than the ones I provided below. If this is the text, you should use parenthetical endnoting (e.g. Ginsberg, et. al. 2014: 41). If you are citing a lecture, you should provide the lecture number. Citations to class forums should list the author’s name and the date of the post.

Prompt:
The Constitution of the United States vested relatively few powers in the national (or federal) government. In an essay, describe the specific powers vested in the federal government by the U.S. Constitution and assess why these powers were vested in the federal government rather than the states. In order to assess why these powers and not others were vested in the federal government, you should consider the historical events and the governance of the territory that became the United States in the period from roughly the 1760s through 1787. Readings that you should consult to answer this question: Ginsberg, Lowi, Weir, Tolbert, and Spitzer, chapters 1-3; The Declaration of Independence; the Articles of Confederation; the Constitution of the United States; and Federalist 10 (in the appendix to your text)
