Order Description
How does Eugenides’ novel, Middlesex, is in dialogue with the history of sexuality you have explored in this class so far? I want you to be specific in your thesis statement or claim [italicize your thesis statement]. Focus on a specific moment, character, incident, symbol, object, etc, and make an argument in relation to the larger history of sexuality. You need to support your claims by textual evidence; that is, by using quotations from the novel. Ideally, put the novel in a dialogue with one of previous discourses: hermaphrodites, religious and legal discourses, medical discourses, Foucault’s claims, etc. Pick one of them, and discuss how the novel considers such historical-sexual issues. I want to see how the sexual history you have learned in this class contributes to your reading of a contemporary novel that addresses contemporary sexual issues. The best way to do this is to be specific about a historical discourse (either medical, or religious, or legal, or hermaphrodites, or lesbianism, whatever you want to choose) and explore and discuss how this discourse appears in Middlesex?
