Write a 4-5 page source analysis on a single primary source. A source analysis is a research paper that examines a single historical primary source (document, image, piece of music, artifact) to explain the sources value to a specific project and to the historical record in general. Each student must pick a primary source from the span of the class (through consultation with their instructor) and research the source for the following information:  Genre  Author  Purpose  Audience  Context  Contemporary Significance  Historical Significance It is critical to recognize that not all of this information necessarily needs to originate with secondary sources explicitly on your primary source alone. For example, working with a Roman sculpture such as the “Venus de Milo,” will require general secondary sources on Roman history as well as the history of sculpture in general to fully put this source in its proper context. Strong papers will think creatively about how to apply their secondary sources to improve understanding of their primary source. In this regard, studying less famous primary sources can actually be more rewarding that working on something with hundreds of books published on the topic. An “A” paper will meet the minimum word count, be relatively free from writing errors, and thoroughly address all of these requirements. In addition the best papers will demonstrate the application of information from secondary sources that are not explicitly on the chosen source.
