You will write about one of the Civil War feature films listed below. The Final Paper must be at least four pages in length, adhere to MLA format, and have two documented sources, other than our course text and video series. You are required to incorporate two sources of criticism into the Final Paper and document them according to MLA Format. (The Works Cited Page will be your fifth page.) You may choose to agree or disagree with the criticism, but insert your own opinion and arrive at a conclusion. By responding to the ideas of others, you will be arriving at your own interpretation, a synthesis of ideas. Remember, this is your paper.
The Birth of a Nation (1915) Gone With the Wind (1939)
The Red Badge of Courage (1951) Shenandoah (1965)
Glory (1989) Gettysburg (1993)
Andersonville (1996) Gods and Generals (2003)
Cold Mountain (2003)
Keep in mind that these papers are essays for a history class and not movie reviews. You need not provide a summary of the plot for the film. You should, however, provide examples from the film to support the points that you make in your paper. You need to deal with the content of the film as a depiction of historical events or themes, even if you do not like a film personally. In order to be effective as a critical analysis of a historical film, you must place the material in its proper historical context.
