Utah Approves Abortion Waiting Period
Abstract
The aim of this research paper is to show the key issue raised and its importance to gender, a discussion of its weakness and/or strength and three questions raised; also, has my opinion about the significant to women in history.
A bill, House Bill 461, requiring women to wait 72 hours before aborting was passed by the Utah House of Representatives. In contrast, the current law gives women 24 hours to wait.
One weakness of the bill was stated by Karrie Galloway of the Planned Parenthood who stated that it was a move to alleviate abortion cases through shaming women (Jodi, 2012). Strength of the bill is that it gives women ample information, using a comparison of the bill’s 72 hours of waiting and the current 24 hours, between the initial appointments and before the abortion procedure is carried out, arguably because once abortion is performed one can’t redo it.
Three questions raised; one of the questions is if the requirements of the bill will be able to alleviate abortion cases. The second question is the reason why not a woman not be faced with a life-long impacting decision with 72 hours to contemplate consequences that could be life-long. Utah, in women’s history, would make it one of the countries with the longest duration between the first appointment and the abortion procedure. The third question, as Representative Carol Spackman Moss stated, was the reason why only men (in women’s history) who run all the abortion bills.
In my opinion, the passing of the bill is justifiable because doesn’t stop anyone to aborting, rather, offering more time for one to mull over the action before performing it because one may live with self-regret for the rest of her life.
