Reading Practice #3
For this assignment you are to pick a movie/television scene that either supports or subverts Laura Mulvey’s claim that the cinema (in which we, for the purposes of this class, include TV) is dominated by the male gaze. You will need to describe the scene in a way that highlights the different gazes at work, as well as explain how her theory applies to your selection. Finally, you will need to bring in another author from the semester to enhance your analysis in some significant way.
Requirements:
• Use two quotes from Mulvey to help make your argument.
• Incorporate the work of another author from this semester, other than Bazin or Eisenstein, into your argument. This author’s work should make a substantial contribution to your essay.
• Include at least two quotes from this additional author.
• Format the paper appropriately (“normal” font style, 11 or 12 point font, one-page max, double spaced, etc.).
• You cannot use an example that I already discussed/explained in class.
Things to keep in mind:
• Choose your example carefully. This is half the battle. It is difficult to make a good argument if your example doesn’t lend itself to the task.
• Make sure to describe your chosen sequence/scene well. You won’t be able to analyze it properly if you don’t do so. Be efficient and thorough.
• This is the final essay of the semester, and as such, I expect it to demonstrate that you have a good grasp on the course material.
• Make sure your quotes clearly connect to your argument and are fully integrated into the text of your essay. Don’t just drop quotes in!
• Make sure you get the authors’ arguments correct.
• Be thorough in your use of Mulvey, and account for all the elements of the male gaze.
