Fahrenheit 451.

You are to write a paper on a literary topic related to Fahrenheit 451. Begin reading the novel on the first day of class and complete reading by midterm. Do not wait until the final days of class to write your research paper.Think about questions like this:-Does the novel contain a great deal of symbolism?Perhaps you could write a paper that deals with Bradbury’s use of symbolism in Fahrenheit 451. If so, be specific and choose one recurring symbol or a symbol that plays a large part in your interpretation of the novel’s overall meaning or purpose.A symbol could be a color, an object, an element (like fire or water), a part of nature (a flower, an animal, a tree, the sky, etc.), a season, a religious symbol, an element of the weather (storms, rain, heat, wind, or sun), a time of day (morning or night, for example), lightness or darkness, etc.-How does the change in setting affect the development of the plot?-Does Fahrenheit 451 have a particular theme that you could analyze? How does Bradbury convey that theme (through what literary devices) and what is the effect created?Common literary themes are: a great journey (could be both literal and figurative); loss of innocence; the noble sacrifice; the great battle (could be between forces, like man v. nature, man v. God, man v. self); the fall from grace; love and friendship; revenge; fate; life’s great mystery; death and rebirth; the unhealable wound.-Does the author use a metaphor that is particularly poignant or interesting?Could you analyze that metaphor and discuss its importance in the novel?Choose a thesis that will prove something about your topic. Do NOT write an informative essay about the author’s biography or recap/summarize the story. Literary analysis requires you to argue something/prove a point. This means that the position you take has to be arguable (i.e. someone else could argue against it). You are not tasked with providing me with a factual account of the novel’s events; instead, you should be arguing for your unique interpretation of some aspect of the novel.Example: The setting and characters in The Great Gatsby suggest that affluence results in dangerous repercussions. (Then prove it.)Example: Hemingway uses nature to symbolize death in A Farewell to Arms. (Then prove it.)Begin planning your literary research paper now. This is an ongoing project that you will work on while you do other lessons in this course.
