Explain civilian life values vs. war “values”–what happens when war breaks out and civilian life is disrupted? Why is it difficult for civilians to accept the new reality?

The paper will consist of the usual 4 pages (maximum), double space, MLA style, analytical essay on 2 or 3 texts among the following:

Joyeux Noel, WW1 poetry and songs, Deogratias, Grave of the Fireflies, S, and articles from Sex and War ( “Sex and War” and “Women and War” ). If you decide on WW1 poetry, make sure to cover at least two poems. You cannot focus on only two films.

The topics may vary according to your interests; however, here are some suggestions (use the texts read in class as examples):

The representation of WAR in different genres: novel, graphic novel, poetry and songs, Japanese animated drama, film–how do these genre help visualize the war experience? What audiences do they address?

The representation of war from the point of view of common soldiers and civilians (women and children)–should the civilian’s perspective count in a war discussion?

Clash of logics: civilian life values vs. war “values”–what happens when war breaks out and civilian life is disrupted? Why is it difficult for civilians to accept the new reality?

Civilians’ strategies of survival: navigating an unknown and evil reality–what would anyone do and how far would anyone go to survive?

Beauty and war: the healing effect of music, the calming effect of beauty, the sacredness of innocence–how is it possible that in the middle of war ugliness beauty can still offer a redeeming quality?

Concepts presented in Potts’ articles (“Women and War”) applied to the texts discussed in class
