(600 words minimum) papers on the films assigned for class and on Plato’s Republic .
Explain all of Plato’s arguments in the text and from class; and show how the film’s details illustrate and provide emotional support for his reasoning.
Thus, half your paper should explain Plato’s arguments/ his reasons for his claims. Half should illustrate the details of that reasoning with specific cinematography details (lighting and camera) from the films. NO plot summaries. And No personal opinions.
For example, for the Plato part of the paper, your paper will earn an A (9-10pts) if you explain all of the arguments from class discussion/lecture and course materials on Blackboard and the text. You may support your explanation with short quotes from the text, in addition to support from class. But explain your points clearly in your own words. For the film part of the paper, you should support all your claims about how the film illustrates the Plato arguments with specific film details, especially regarding the lighting and camera angles.
Your arguments should contain no errors of reasoning and no factual mistakes, especially regarding Plato’s arguments. All your writing should be free of errors in spelling, grammar, punctuation and word choice. Up to 2 pts will be deducted from your points for poor writing. You may earn back these points by going to the writing center to improve your writing.
Your paper will earn an F (0-5 pts) if I cannot follow your arguments or if they have unsupported or false claims or if you provide insufficient details about Plato and/or the films to show that you have attended class, watched the entire film in class, and read the text and the course materials. Writing errors that make your paper unclear or hard to read will negatively affect your grade.
The required text is Plato’s Republic. I use the Cornford edition.
Any cheating may cause you to fail the class. You may write papers with one other student-with both names at the top of a single paper. Otherwise, any plagiarism is cheating.
Watch the movie ‘M’. Read Bk 9, esp. pp. 139-43 & 287-320.
And the Plato part of its paper topic plus a second part of the Plato part of the paper: whether the main character illustrates Plato’s concept of a master passion in his argument against the unjust life, using 2 scenes from the movie. And write about the lighting and camera in the movie
