Geology 101 – Volcano Contrast Report
In this assignment you will be contrasting two volcanic regions (Cascades and Hawaii). You will be directed to collect information through the United States Geologic Survey – Hazards Program website. You may reference additional, supporting data from your textbook or other ‘.gov’ or ‘.org’ websites. All together this mini-report should be at least 250 words. Submit your attached file or enter written text through the assignment page in Canvas.
Please visit the following website: http://volcanoes.usgs.gov/vhp/observatories.php (Links to an external site.). Click on the hyperlink to the USGS Cascades Volcano Observatory to view information regarding the volcanoes found in the Cascade Range. A map of the Cascade Range will be shown with several volcanoes marked by colored triangles. Click on one to read about it. Then click on the hyperlink to the USGS Hawaiian Volcano Observatory to view information regarding the volcanoes associated with the Hawaiian Islands. Pick a volcano from each…like Mt. St. Helen’s from the Cascade Range against Mauna Loa from the Hawaiian Islands. See photo below.
You must choose to contrast one of the following statements, learn about two volcanoes, and discuss how they compare/contrast:
(1) discuss the eruptive style and potential – such as…violent or quiet, earth-shattering or no big deal? This often involves a discussion on general composition and temperature of material erupting. Does the eruption frequency have anything to do with the magnitude of the eruption?
(2) discuss the plate boundary settings – such as…what type of plate boundary exists at each location, if any? How does this affect eruption style? Are earthquakes (seismicity) more common in one setting versus the other? Where would you rather live?
(3) discuss the type of volcano – such as…shield, composite, cinder, caldera, etc. How might the type affect urban planning in the area? Does the shape matter? Which would you rather witness? How is the type of the volcano related to plate tectonics?
(4) discuss the secondary risks (what often occurs as a result of the eruption) at each setting – such as…mud flows (lahars), fire, air pollution, poisonous gases, collapsed buildings, air traffic re-routing, devastating blasts of hot gas (pyroclastic flows), and global cooling.
Cite your references by pasting the webpage(s) or detailing the book(s).
All together this mini-report should at least 250 words.
Identify which two volcanoes you are contrasting as well as the main statement (1 of 4 from above) within the first two sentences. Organize your summary with a topic sentence to introduce your mineral. Use separate paragraphs to discuss topics.
