Persuasive Speech Assignment (CDL)

• Prepare a 7-9 minute speech. The theme for this speech is “Making a Difference” and you must choose a topic that in some way supports and advances this theme. This project can easily focus on the company you used for your Informative Speech: its product, concepts, processes, events, or ideas. Using the same company and its efforts can save you time in your research for this project. Should you not be able to make a connection with the company you used in your Informative Speech, then you can speak on any other issue that will make a difference: gender, ethnic, cultural, religious, or social issues that relate to you and your audience.

• You are to explore a topic, conduct a survey of attitudes held by your classmates about the topic through our discussion forum questions. Other important information might be demographic information about the class population. Additionally, identify and address any problems with, or deficiencies in, your classmate’s understanding (and/or inclination towards) your topic. In other words, convince your audience of your Persuasive Speech topic.

• A minimum of four (3) sources must be used and cited in the outline (using in-text citations), and listed in the reference page (bibliography). In addition, a minimum of two (2) of your three sources must be cited orally during your speech (review this chapter on this topic in your textbook).

• At least two of the resources must come from the City Colleges of Chicago or Chicago Public Libraries resources (electronic or manual). If you use the company that you used for your Informative Speech, then you will already have three references.

o Remember, only one (1) interview can be used as a reference.

• Visual Aids are required. Revisit the chapter on visual aids in our textbook.

• On the day you present, you will turn in a binder or portfolio with the following items:
A worksheet, outline, reference page, copy of visual, and audience analysis page (based on your knowledge of our class and class feedback to you in the discussion forum).

• These items must be in a folder or binder.

• The posted policy for late speeches still applies.

• Any speech that does not include a preview of main points in the introduction and a summary of main points in the conclusion will receive a full grade deduction.

• Any speech that does not include a call to action, an appeal, or a challenge in the conclusion will receive a letter grade deduction.

• Any speech that does not cite three sources in the outline and on a reference page and two oral citations in the speech will receive a letter grade deduction.

• Any speech that is not delivered extemporaneously will receive a letter grade deduction.

• The items listed above are technical requirements, please make sure your reasons make sense and are related to your audience, as this will also determine the grade that you receive.

• Finally, please remember that class begins promptly and so do speeches. Class will end when all present have completed their speeches, no exceptions! So strive to arrive on time.

• This is your third speech class! Use all of the feedback that you’ve received previously from your classmates and I to make this third and final speech a great one!
