What were the turning points for changes in the institution and why did it change? How did enslaved Africans and African Americans (men and women) adapt, react to, resist, or propel some of these changes. How and when did slavery end? What contributed to the end of the institution? How did African Americans react to the emancipation? How do the meanings of freedom change over the course of the history of slavery in the United States?
