One idea that you must respond to is Nietzsche’s claim that moral values are not given for once and for all by a God, but that they emerge under certain conditions, promoting the survival and growth of a particular type of people (the strong, the weak, the rich, the poor, the young, the old, the males, the females, etc. Nietzsche illustrates his claim with the example of pity, which he says is a value that favors the weak.
You should also discuss briefly, for the length of no more than one page, two (or three) virtues, or, rather, moral dispositions, (since what one person calls a virtue, another calls a vice) of which you think it important that they should be promoted in current society. Pick for your discussion two or three ‘virtues’ out of the following list: kindness, pride, pity, patience, perseverance, modesty, discipline, chastity, ambition, courage. Make sure to give (a) reason(s) for your choices.
For the rest explain one or two substantial Nietzschean ideas, and give a critical evaluation of that or those idea(s).
The extent to which you paraphrase or quote Nietzsche should not exceed 20% of your essay. So, do NOT write a SUMMARY. Instead give critical (evaluative) comments, that is, express the extent of your agreement or disagreement with the ideas in the text and provide reasons (= arguments) for your evaluation and examples that illustrate these reasons.
Some criteria I will use to determine your grade.
– Taking on challenging ideas (instead of minor or easy ones)
– Clarity and Concision of your presentation of ideas
– Strength of your ideas, (have they general significance? Are they not absurd?)
– Providing striking and relevant examples.
– Originality of your comments, insights.
– Pertinence of your quotes and paraphrases
– Giving persuasive evaluative comments.
