Research Proposal

Assignment:

We have the opportunity to construct a research proposal about a topic we want to further investigate and discuss. The proposal will be approximately 2-3 pages and include an annotated bibliography of three sources. Note: This assignment will lead to the development of our research paper.

Rationale:

The skills used in this assignment are essential in understanding and processing information, establishing the relationship between sophisticated use of sources and research writing, conducting research relevant to the scope of inquiry, and creating a discussion based on a central focus.

Process:

1. Determine a problem that exists in our society (e.g., education, politics, morality, religion, technology, science, higher education). While the problem should be significant to many people, select a topic with which you are familiar.

2. Using research strategies from class discussions as guidance, investigate the various aspects associated with your topic.

3. Construct a 2-3 page research proposal that includes the following sections:

Introduction: Present an overall introduction to your topic by discussing the overall significance of the problem and its importance to you as well as the ways in which this topic is important to the reader.

Methods: Discuss the process you will undertake to research your topic and 3-5 main research questions that will guide your investigation.

Sources: Discuss specific texts or categories of text that you plan to use to further your understanding on your research topic and why/how you think these texts will be helpful. You should present at least five sources, three of which will be annotated. Note that an annotated bibliography summarizes the source you read, indicates your analysis of the text, and shows its relevance to your research.

Timeline: Discuss your research process and when you plan to complete the major phases of your research paper (research deadlines, drafting and revising paper, etc.)

Conclusion: Remind the reader about the importance of the topic and need for further investigation.

Effective proposal:

An effective proposal will have the following characteristics:

A narrowed scope and a clear sense of purpose and focus

An organizational structure appropriate the assignment

Language and style appropriate to the audience and context

 Appropriate detail, information, and examples

 Proper mechanics (spelling, grammar, punctuation)

Format and Design:

Your essay will follow these format and design requirements:
