Thesis statement: Celebrities in America are paid more than they deserve because their contribution to the society is very little.
The American celebrities get paid for so much yet what they give to the society is very minimal. With the exception of being taxpayers and bringing fame to America, American celebrities get paid much than they give to the society. One is that they use charity donations as a smokescreen at the expense of the poor. The celebrities undermine the underprivileged by using them as an avenue of getting income (Dakanen, 2010). By aiding the underprivileged through donations, the celebrities are given endorsements that assist in putting more money into their bank accounts. Thus the celebrities are paid more than they plough back into the society.
Two is that when they donate to the underprivileged, the time that they are thrown into limelight could be used in more constructive ways. American celebrities get media exposure, keeping in mind that it is free of any charges, which could be used in other ways such as educative programs. Little media time, such as through ads that flash during news time generates lots of income for the industry. When celebrities get such free of charge media exposure at the expense of such profitable adverts, they impoverish the society. The media industry in turn will have to make the society-through the posting of ads or hoisting of other constructive programs- dig deeper into their pockets to cater for such losses.
Third, the common people, the non-celebrities, pay much to the celebrities such as through buying of tickets, and compared to the income they get after they pay the taxes and through their clandestine intentions, all the money that they squeeze form the public is left all to themselves. Thus, compared to their payments and the little ways that the society benefits from them, they don’t deserve to receive their high salaries.
Forth, the celebrities in the entertainment industry get paid for more than they deserve when their income is compared to the duration that they take to earn it. Other professional such as doctors, people whose profession is of much significance to the society than the entertainment that is done by the celebrities don’t earn as much.
Celebrities are paid lots of money for something that took them lesser period to do (such as athletes) or prepare (such as movie celebrities). It can be taken the example of an athlete, who participates and wins in a major race at duration of two hours and at gets paid millions in income. Conversely, a doctor has to use a considerable time of his life learning through primary school level, high school level, and university level for a BA degree and to cap it all, gain experience in the field. Even though the professional is competently qualified, no matter at what level, he won’t be in the capacity to get earn an equivalent payment in a year that a celebrity gets paid.
Lastly, even though the celebrities entertain us and make our lives enjoyable, they do not do things that positively influence the society. However, a considerable number of them have a negative impact on the society. Take the case of a celebrity actor portraying a killer and his audience is a child. The child may mimic the actor, either literary or figuratively. Yet, the celebrity actor gets his payment by negatively influencing a future society.
In conclusion, American celebrities earn much than they deserve. When the significance of the celebrities to the society is compared to their earnings, and the little that they plough back to the society with an exception of the taxes, it can’t be disclaimed than their earning exceeds their contribution to the society by far.
