1. Consider the mindset and understanding of primitive /ancient humans; consider too the need to better understand the world in which we exist. Imagine what it would have been like to live in a natural world without the benefit of science and technology to explain natural phenomena. After reviewing chapter 1, discuss the significance and role of religious belief in the primitive world.
2. Think about the role of mythology within the primitive/ancient world. Consider also the similarities across cultures when Flood or creation myths are compared. Remember myth simply means “story” and is used to teach not to imply an untruth. Why do early civilizations have these stories as part of their greater mythology?
3. Think about the significance of the cave paintings at Chauvet; why are they important? What do they reveal about the perspective of the ancient world?
4. *What characteristics distinguish the ancient civilizations of Mesopotamia, and how do they differ from that of the Hebrews?
5. After reviewing the section on the Hebrews, Moses and the Ten Commandments, think about the important of law for the ancient world. How might the application ‘law’ be a liberating way to conduct life?
6. Consider the ‘anthropomorphic deities of the Greeks. Why do you think is these imperfect and limited gods and goddesses look, behave, and think like humans?
7. Why do you think the Homeric Epic is so significant to ancient Greek identity?
8. Think about the concept of ‘Golden Age’, especially the reign of Pericles. Discuss the significant contributions of Pericles and what the articulation of those endeavors may reveal about the Athenians.
